Nursing Student Opportunities
As a nursing student, you have many great opportunities at UAB Medicine to work in health care while attending school. The advantages include earning extra money, gaining hands-on job experience, making valuable connections with managers and leaders in your field, and improving your nursing skills – all while building confidence. A few of these opportunities are highlighted below:
If you’ve completed your first year of nursing school or fundamental courses and are now in your third or fourth semester, the nursing student graduate aide (NSGA) role is a perfect fit for your current skill level. Much like our patient care technicians (PCTs), our NSGAs help provide direct patient care as part of our interdisciplinary care teams, but they rotate throughout the hospital rather than staying on one unit. NSGAs perform PCT duties but also provide other forms of direct patient care, including changing dressings, inserting and removing Foley catheters with an RN, providing oxygen via nasal cannula, administering nebulizer treatments, and more. This is a great opportunity to increase your clinical experience in different nursing specialties.
If you are currently in nursing school, this role helps you develop core clinical skills while earning priority placement for your preceptorship at UAB St. Vincent’s. Much like PCTs, our SNTs help provide direct patient care as part of our care teams, but they float throughout the hospital rather than staying on one unit. SNTs perform PCT duties but also provide other forms of direct patient care, including performing venipunctures. This Tier I role offers you the opportunity to transition to a Tier II role, which includes an expanded scope of practice. Transferring to a Tier II position depends on eligibility and position availability.
Serving as a PCT is yet another option for gaining valuable, hands-on experience on a nursing unit before you graduate nursing school. These direct patient care roles include certain technical aspects of inpatient care – directed by the RN or LPN on the unit – and working alongside bedside nurses as part of our care teams. In this role, you can develop skills such as empathy and being approachable, while demonstrating your commitment to health care standards and awareness of patient and personal safety. Our PCTs provide compassionate care by monitoring vital signs, obtaining specimens for testing, helping nursing staff administer basic treatments, and assisting patients with everyday bathing and toileting needs.
If you’re not ready to support our nursing staff in a direct patient care role, you can perform administrative duties on a specific unit, to help ensure smooth operations. It can help you develop interpersonal skills through interacting with patients, guests, and other members of the care team.

Internship Opportunities
If you’re not sure where to start your nursing career, we offer RN internship opportunities that can help you find the area that’s best for you.
This paid, 13-week inpatient RN internship allows you to experience three different nursing units, each with its own specialized focus and stimulating environment. With over 30 nursing units at UAB Hospital participating, you will choose either three acute care units or two acute care units plus the Emergency Department, an ICU, or a Women’s Services unit. You’ll rotate through each area, approximately about four weeks in each.
This paid, 12-week RN clinic internship allows you to focus on different areas of clinical practice at UAB Medicine’s academic ambulatory clinics, with a specialized focus on procedural and specialty clinics. You will select three ambulatory specialty clinic settings and rotate through them for about four weeks each.
During your internship, you’ll learn about specific disease processes, navigate the care plan, and develop the skills needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based patient care. After completing your internship, you’ll select where you want to work based on available staff nurse positions.
