UAB Hospital PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency

Card text

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at UAB Hospital is a one-year program designed to prepare its graduates to practice as independent pharmacy specialists in various ambulatory care areas. Its focus is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective in providing advanced, pharmacy-centered ambulatory care services. In addition to preparing the resident for clinical pharmacist positions in ambulatory care and faculty areas, the successful completion of the program will also prepare the graduate to attain board certification in ambulatory care pharmacy (BCACP).

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program at UAB Hospital includes a combination of required learning experiences (rotations) and elective learning experiences tailored to the residents’ interest areas.

Orientation provides a general overview of the departmental organization, support units, and resident responsibilities. Benefits include health and accident insurance, holiday time off, and support to attend residency related professional conference(s).

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
When I began pursuing PGY2 residency programs, I knew I wanted a program that would challenge me while allowing me to explore a wide range of clinical areas. After meeting the incredible directors and preceptors at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, I knew I had found the perfect fit. While continuing to learn more about the program through the match process, it was clear that these preceptors were deeply invested in my development, both as a clinician and as an individual. I’m grateful to be back in Birmingham and part of the UAB community once again!

The PGY2 Ambulatory Care program at UAB provides a broad range of clinical specialty rotations not commonly available at other institutions, including dermatology, neurology, and rheumatology, with even more opportunities continually being added. We also have the opportunity to collaborate across other clinical disciplines to further optimize patient care. This diversity of patient populations and disease states has given me a deeper understanding of the role of ambulatory care pharmacists in improving patient outcomes through collaborative, patient-centered care.

After residency, I plan to pursue a career as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacy specialist and contribute to the advancement of the field by mentoring future pharmacy residents. I am most excited for the opportunity to directly impact patients’ lives and give back to the city of Birmingham.

Our goal is to develop a highly skilled practitioner who will be successful in any setting they choose to practice after graduation.
