UAB Hospital PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency

Card text

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency at UAB Hospital is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). This one-year program is designed to prepare graduates to be pharmacy specialists in the care of patients with infectious diseases. It focuses on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to be integral members of an antimicrobial stewardship program and contribute to public health efforts to reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistance and vaccine-preventable diseases. In addition to qualifying the resident for clinical pharmacy specialist positions in infectious diseases or faculty areas, graduates will be eligible to apply for Infectious Diseases Pharmacy (BCIDP) and HIV Pharmacist (AAHIVP) specialty certifications upon successful completion of the program.

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program at UAB Hospital includes a combination of required and elective learning opportunities (rotations) throughout the year that give the resident a wide variety of experiences in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.

Orientation provides a general overview of the departmental organization, support units, and resident responsibilities. Benefits include health and accident insurance, holiday time off, and support to attend residency related professional conference(s).

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
When applying for PGY2 Infectious Diseases programs, I knew that I wanted a program that would challenge me and allow me to gain experience with a wide variety of disease states. UAB is a large academic medical center with a Level I Trauma Center that is heavily involved in clinical research and innovative care, so I knew that I would gain experience in these areas and have the opportunity to work with experts in the field of infectious diseases.

The diverse rotation opportunities in the ambulatory setting, including the Hepatitis B and C Clinic and the UAB 1917 Clinic at Dewberry (HIV) – as well as inpatient rotations serving immunocompromised populations, the Trauma/Burn ICU, and clinical microbiology – provide a well-rounded experience and align with my clinical interests in infectious diseases. Additionally, the interactions I had with pharmacist preceptors and physicians during my interview were overwhelmingly positive, and I felt that I would be supported both professionally and personally over the next year. I am looking forward to the upcoming year!

Our goal is to develop a highly skilled practitioner who will be successful in any setting they choose to practice after graduation.
